EDGEFIELD, S.C.— Michael Cambareri received national recognition from the National Wild Turkey Federation as a recipient of the Roger M. Latham Sportsman Wild Turkey Service Award for his extraordinary dedication to the organization’s mission.

“I am honored and humbled to receive this award for doing something that I truly enjoy and have a passion for,” Cambareri said. “The NWTF’s mission in habitat work and promoting hunting with the R3 program is spot on. I would like to thank all the other volunteers that work with me; we are all part of this award.”

Michael Cambareri received one of five Roger M. Latham Sportsman Wild Turkey Service Awards at the 46th annual NWTF Convention and Sport Show, sponsored by Mossy Oak.

Camberari is an avid teacher and instructor. In his hunter education classes, Camberari not only teaches the importance of game laws, safety and everything there is to know about turkey hunting, but he takes time to explain the important connection between hunting and natural resource conservation.

Cambereri’s volunteerism includes introducing the National Archery in the Schools Program in the Sandy Creek School System, teaching hunter safety courses, active participation in the Wheelin’ Sportsmen programs and veterans’ hunting and fishing programs, to name a few.

Moreover, Cambareri is a crucial volunteer for both the New York State Chapter and his local chapter. He is the treasurer for both as well as the banquet chair for his local chapter. Cambareri’s efforts within his various volunteer roles are responsible for raising thousands of dollars for the NWTF’s mission delivery.

“Mike’s accomplishments and background as a dedicated conservationist and member of the flock precede him,” NWTF CEO Becky Humphries said. “We are thankful for Mike’s genuine dedication and are proud to honor him with a Roger Latham award.”

The NWTF presents Roger M. Latham Sportsman Wild Turkey Service awards to members who are not employed as professional wildlife managers but have made significant contributions to wild turkey conservation.

Dave Streb

The turkey hunting world has suffered another great loss with the passing of Dave Streb of Cuba, NY, at the age of 73. Dave served as a past NYS Chapter President. He also was a co founder of the Enchanted Mountains local chapter. He served as it's first President and for many years as Hunter Heritage Banquet Chairman. Dave did many events for the NWTF over the years and promoted the organization to all those that would listen!

After a career with the postal service, Dave's love for hunting and the outdoors lead him to a new career in 1982. Dave took the job of Vice President of Sales and Marketing for Quaker Boy Game Calls and remained there until his retirement in 2015. Countless people knew Dave through Quaker Boy. He was tremendously out going and made many friends along the way.

Dave was a great teacher and spent much time working with new hunters of not just turkeys, but elk, deer, waterfowl, and small game. He also worked a number of years during the 1980s as an elk hunting guide in Idaho.

Dave was a Life and Sponsor member of the NWTF and a Life member of the NRA.

Anyone wishing to make a donation in Dave's name, per family wishes, please send to NWTF Legacy Program, Box 530, Edgefield, SC 29824.

Fred Evans

The wild turkey world is in mourning with the passing of Fred Evans. Mr.Turkey, as he was affectionately called, died January 15, at the age of 92.

Fred was the driving force in establishing a program to reintroduce wild turkeys to NY. Through his vision he felt the way to reestablish turkeys was by capturing wild birds and transferring them to suitable habitat around the state. But how to capture them? In the 1950s there were no trap and transfer programs that he could glean information from. He had to invent a way, so he designed  a cannon net capture method that remains today.

Where to find turkeys, as they hadn't been in NY in nearly a century?  In the late 1940s and 50s turkeys from a small surviving PA flocks expanded northward into bordering counties in southwestern NY, this was where wild birds could be found. In 1959 trapping commenced in Allegany State Park. The trap and transfer program that began under Fred's leadership was a model for others to follow.

Over the next several decades birds were moved to other areas of NY, captured birds also were sent to other states in the northeast and Canada. Fred, a licensed pilot, often flew the turkeys to their new destinations.

Fred mentored biologists all over the northeast and Canada and helped them establish their own wild turkey programs. His influence was invaluable.

Fred didn't stop at re-establishing turkeys. He also was the man charged with re-introducing ospreys and bald eagles to parts of NY. Fred's and his crew's work was successful. Ospreys and bald eagles are common sights now in NY.

In his 35 years of working for the NYSDEC, Fred worked on many other projects, but, none greater than those mentioned above.

Fred was of great help to the fledgling NWTF (National Wild Turkey Federation) serving  on the National Board and Technical committee where he was invaluable in providing guidance to national leadership.

Over the years Fred received numerous, well deserved awards, but, his induction into the NYS Outdoorsman Hall of Fame, sponsored by the Enchanted Mountains Chapter NWTF, was one of the most valued recognitions.

Fred's legacy will live on this spring when hunters hear the gobble of the wild turkey and remember him as the man most responsible for the wild turkeys return to NY.

For those wishing to donate in memory of Fred Evans, please send to: NWTF Legacy Program, Box 530, Edgefield, SC. 29824.
